Asia was chosen to bear the Olympic torch as part of a contest sponsored by Coca-Cola Corp. On June 9, 1996, Asia, accompanied by her father, Jerry Renning who ran as an escort runner, ran down Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. Surrounded by family and well-wishers, Asia proudly carried the torch aloft for 5/8 of a mile.
